Hands down the best watercolor book I've ever seen. I have over a dozen watercolor painting books, mostly used as a dictionary of various techniques to remind myself about every so often. I've been a professional artist for over 15 years, and this book still taught me things, in addition to reminding me of forgotten techniques.*NOTE* HALF OF THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE AS THE SEPARATE BOOK TITLED "The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook - Landscapes" which at the time of this purchase was available for $15, while this book has double the content and a lot of great example art for only $20. I'm glad I got this one instead, it was worth it.I agree with the other reviews that say this book is great for beginners, however I think it is so massive and contains so many examples of artwork, step by steps, color charts, list of bad fugitive paint pigments to avoid, and the effects of different paint brushes, that it is a valuable resource for even the experienced artist.

I've watched hundreds of Youtube videos and looked at many, many watercolor technique books, but I have to say that this book is the best one I've seen. Gordon covers just about every technique used by watercolor artists except the realistic approach used in botanical illustration. But, it must be made clear, painting and illustration are two different things. I'm so happy to have purchased this book and would encourage others to do so as well. It's really two separate books published in one volume, so there is a little repetition, but if you are looking to immerse yourself in the world of watercolor, this is an excellent place to start. The brush stroke lessons are invaluable. Gordon doesn't sugar-coat things either. He lets you know that it's a lot of work to get really good at being a watercolor artist. I became annoyed early on with books that purported to make it 'easy' to learn the art of painting with watercolor. Gordon MacKenzie makes it clear, however, that if you love to paint and want to get better, applying yourself to the techniques that he presents within this book offers an accessible pathway to watercolor painting.

Excellent book, I reviewed this book in my local library before I bought it. The techniques you can learn are great, I'm an experienced watercolor artist and I'm still learning new things. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take there art further.

This is a really nice book. Super colorful, beautifully designed, easy to understand, multiple visual examples on nearly every page. Great for visual learners but also includes plenty of written commentary. It includes really important stuff like quality comparison of different brand paints - by color! All the way to experimental techniques that the author has tried with success. I've helped teach drawing and watercoloring to architecture students and I will definitely refer to this next time I teach.I wrote this review to make note that this book ALSO INCLUDES: The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook - Landscapes by the same author. Half-way through the book you will come across the latter, exactly the same book that is sold separately. It does not say this anywhere on the cover. It only says it in the product description on the Amazon.com product page and on the back cover. So you get TWO BOOKS in ONE. Sweet.Enjoy. Ta.

I was a little surprised by the book when I first got it. The presentation seems *quite* dated. Some of this material almost could’ve been from the 1970s. It just does not engage. The example pictures are tiny, printed on dry, rough paper. There are cheesy illustrations that look like they were by some washed up cartoonist. I’m sorry. I wanted to like this book. I guess it could appeal to some people but it doesn’t appeal to me. I much prefer the fresher presentation of the Jean Haynes line of books.After thinking about it a bit more, this seems like an ok reference work. Suppose you wanted to, say, figure out how to use masking fluid. You could just look it up in this book. The representations are still small and quite difficult to see, but at least the book is layed out in a fairly easily accessed dictionary format. If you are looking for a book that can guide you to begin to appreciate this medium, If you are just a clueless n00b at painting, like me, or someone who has a clue, this type of instructional book is likely neither motivating nor engaging. This book is not pedagogically organized, but rather a shotgun blast of ‘info’.

Excellent book with a lot of information including paint brand names and the quality. Surprising thing I found out is that some "student" quality paints have excellent pigments and will buy those colors as they are usually 1/3 the price of "Artist" quality.Tons of info and lessons, well worth it.And buy the new version as the older version does NOT have nearly as much information.

This book explains dozens of techniques that are perfect for the beginning-to-intermediate watercolorist. It is nicely organized with sufficient photos and clear instructions and guidance. It may be a little advanced for a total beginner but if you know you are going to like and continue to work in watercolor I'd highly recommend it. In ten well-documented and thoroughly researched chapters, fourteen leading scholars dispassionately describe sources and consequences of Amerindian warfare and violence, including ritual violence. Originally presented at an American Anthropological Association symposium, their findings construct a convincing case that bloodshed and killing have been woven into the fabric of indigenous life in North America for many centuries.

The editors argue that a failure to acknowledge the roles of warfare and violence in the lives of indigenous North Americans is itself a vestige of colonial repression—depriving native warriors of their history of armed resistance. These essays document specific acts of Native American violence across the North American continent. Including contributions from anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, and ethnographers, they argue not only that violence existed but also that it was an important and frequently celebrated component of Amerindian life.

About the Author
Richard J. Chacon is an assistant professor of anthropology at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork among the indigenous peoples of Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador. Rubén G. Mendoza is a professor of social and behavioral sciences at California State University, Monterey Bay, where he founded and directs the Institute for Archaeological Science, Technology, and Visualization. A widely published author, he is also a past president of the Association of Latina and Latino Anthropologists.
